Objective:
This electronic portfolio was created as part of the requirement for my professional exam to obtain a master's degree in Educational Technology with a minor in Educational Administration. The objective is to showcase the work I did throughout the master's degree program and to demonstrate how much I have learned and improved in my growth through my EdTech journey.
Introduction:
I began my adventure into the Master’s of Educational Technology at Texas State University – San Marcos in the fall of 2006. I have been looking forward to this moment in my career to climb another step in my professional growth. It has been a tough journey having to juggle family, work and school, but the satisfaction of accomplishment is worth every effort I put into it.
I grew up in Bluefields, a city on the Caribbean Cost of Nicaragua. I lived in Guadalajara, México for 10 years, during the 90’s. I obtained my bachelor's degree in Information Systems at the University of Guadalajara. After graduation I began my career working for the UdeG as a Computer Programmer and Literacy Teacher. We moved to Texas in December of 2000. I, for the first time, and my husband after several years of living in Central America and Mexico.
A few months after arriving in Texas, I enrolled in the Teacher Recruitment Program at Texas State University, back then, Southwest Texas University. I took six courses of Curriculum and Instructions and one course of Reading, for a total of 18 hours. All these courses were online. This was a totally new learning environment for me. The three weeks into the first semester I was totally lost and confused. Luckily some of my virtual classmates had taken online classes before and were able to help me venture through this new way of teaching. The completion of these courses granted me my teaching Secondary Education Certification in Computer Science.
I worked for 3 years as a math and computer teacher at Taylor Middle School in Taylor Texas. I also worked for 3 years at Lexington High School in Lexington Texas as a Technology, Business and Spanish teacher. I am currently employed at Manor New Technology High School as a Technology Application teacher.
My passion is teaching, so even though I obtained my master degree in educational technology, I still plan to continue my career as a secondary classroom teacher. In addition, I plan to develop activities to help teachers integrate technology into their classroom.
My goal for the near future is to start my Ph. D in Instructional Technology at the University of Texas at Austin. As long as there is life, there is hope; hope that I can achieve what I put my mind to.
I would like to close by thanking all of those who made this journey achievable: my husband Marvin, and son Jahman, and my mom and sisters. My friends, Araceli Villegas and Margarita Villegas for their invaluable help. Dr. Byrum, Dr. Stephens, and Dr. Farmer my memorable teachers, and all who in one way or another made my journey possible.
